Tuesday night’s Real Housewives of New York reunion sure had its set-pieces. (It started with Dorinda Medley’s knock, then Bethenny Frankel: businesswoman, happily failed artist, “sore loser,” etc. Bethenny’s squad made a point of wearing T-shirts with Bethenny’s face on them — which has nothing to do with business, obviously — and that’s a good start.) In the same way that the Botox patter feels contrived, it’s not hard to imagine that if every zipped-up lady on reality TV ever had Botox, many of them would probably look the same and/or not be able to say what they want. And yet, the encounter at the expense of Dorinda became less amusing when the real question of the evening — what we thought was the finale — turned out to be more complicated: How does Real Housewives of New York work without the boring, almost-intentional-and-out-of-place Luann de Lesseps?
Possibly not this badly. During last season’s reunion, Bethenny told Luann that she “hates your guts” and accused her of being part of what Bethenny called a “double life.” But in the current season, the condescending hatchet has dropped. Even though many viewers are starting to get a headache from the way things are playing out, there’s a healthy amount of interest in the subplot.
So, it’s with some pleasure that we report that things worked out for Luann and Dennis Reichert, who apparently broke up a month ago. In a move that is no doubt deflating to viewers of Real Housewives, but perhaps a good thing for the franchise, both the few remaining and de-holed Luann had no choice but to accommodate the engagement.
