(CNN) — The son of entertainer Gladys Knight has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to evading Texas sales tax on food, beverages and clothing purchased at her restaurant.
Elvis Demus Knight, 43, said he was arrested in November and tried to blame his father when authorities asked about the seven Texas sales tax charges filed against him.
According to court records, Knight was supposed to pay back $314,102. He pleaded guilty to a single count of evasion and was sentenced by a justice of the peace on Wednesday.
Knight admitted to using a different name on purchases that would later be reported to tax authorities and giving money and goods to people he considered business associates.
Several of those transactions had a price tag that was higher than what was listed on the receipt, the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office said.
Assistant District Attorney Emily Costigan said sales tax from three of the transactions that belonged to his father was owed. She didn’t immediately know if he was charged in these transactions.
“I don’t think Mr. Knight means any harm, but he neglected to pay sales tax when he was buying food and food items for his father,” Costigan said.
An attorney for Elvis Knight did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
